Stumpwork - Part 3 - Underlayers of my Lady

Order of work:

1. Padding for body to be laid first, with emphasis on knees.

2. Make hands/arms, place with hands wrapping the swing wire, secure in place.

Adding my lady to the swing, I first needed to pad her body; this was done with several layers of felt – as shown here in the photograph below.

Left is the first layer, next photo is the second layer.

Below is a side shot, to give you an idea of the thickness of the padding.

As my lady will be sitting on the swing, the knees and part of the legs needed to have the impression of being in front of the swing.

Next I made my hands/arms. I wanted my lady to be wearing gloves, so I painted my covered wire with acrylic paint in yellow, and whilst the paint was still damp I covered with yellow/gold sewing thread.

I then placed the fingers together and made my left hand/arm. I placed the left arm into position to make sure I had the proportions correct, I then proceeded with the other arm.

And this is the piece so far....

It's particularly useful to have the side shot as it gives an idea of how padded the piece really is!
